There are many musicians who look great on stage, but not so much when they take off their clothes and put on regular clothes again. Kurt Cobain was an exception to this rule. He wore awesome outfits everywhere, whether he was off stage or on stage, and his style has stood the test of time even more than 20 years after his death in 1994 at the age of 27. Here are the top 10 best Kurt Cobain outfits that will never go out of style, so you can wear them too if you want to achieve that grunge rock star look!
1) Kurt Cobain in a white hoodie
Kurt wore his iconic Fender Mustang hoodie in so many Nirvana music videos. The white cotton-polyester blend is super soft and a great winter staple for anyone who wants to channel Kurt’s style. It won’t break your bank either! This sweatshirt can be worn casually with denim or dressed up for an evening out with a crisp pair of khakis and wingtip shoes.
2) Kurt Cobain Cardigan
One look at his iconic cardigan—which he wore in nearly every Nirvana music video—and you’ll want to rock it yourself. Try it with faded jeans, a t-shirt, and combat boots for an authentic Cobain look. For a more modern twist, try it over a button-down shirt and slacks for work or date night.
This is one of my favorite looks from Kurt Cobain because I love how well these pieces go together. He also has on some really cool glasses which makes me think he was pretty hipster before hipsters were even invented! If you are going to wear these pieces together I would suggest getting them all from different places so they don’t match perfectly but instead just compliment each other nicely!
3) Nirvana T-Shirt
The classic choice for a grunge look, a Nirvana t-shirt is a great wardrobe addition for casual days. Why not pick up one with his name or one of his band’s names written across it? These classic tees come in all sorts of colors and prints and are sure to go with pretty much anything you already own.
4) Kurt Cobain in blue jeans and a plaid shirt
Sure, it’s another staple—but there’s a reason why plaid shirts and blue jeans are classic choices: they’re easy to wear, comfortable, and work with just about anything. Want to look like Kurt Cobain? Grab a plaid shirt and some blue jeans. Simple as that. Just remember to roll up your sleeves…or not; Kurt wore his sleeves rolled down for most of his life (in part because he had such long arms).
5) Kurt Cobain at JFK Airport
In April of 1994, Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain and his wife Courtney Love arrived at JFK Airport in New York City after a long flight from Europe. The grunge icon was decked out in a brown corduroy jacket over a floral print dress shirt by Fred Perry, straight-leg jeans, and Mephisto sneakers.
6) Kurt Cobain wearing a white button-down with black pants
Kurt wore a number of white button-downs with his trademark ripped jeans. This outfit is simple but effortless and has that grunge look that Kurt and his band Nirvana were known for. It’s also an outfit you can wear every day without looking like you are trying too hard to look grungy. You could replace Kurt’s white button-down with any other plain color in order to make it even more versatile.
7) Kurt Cobain wearing leather pants, a top hat, and sunglasses
Kurt Cobain had a very unique look. His outfits were often thrown together in a very haphazard fashion, but somehow always looked great. This was an outfit he wore at MTV Music Awards in 1993. He wore it along with black pants and a leather jacket and sported some cool hair to complete his rock-and-roll look. This type of style is not something that everyone can pull off, but Kurt has always managed to do so quite well.
8) Kurt Cobain’s worn-out flannel shirt and ripped jeans
Dave Grohl’s flannel shirt and ripped jeans are both Kurt Cobain outfit staples, but he was no slouch when it came to style. While touring with Nirvana and later with Foo Fighters, Grohl is usually spotted in some variation of a t-shirt, jeans, and black Converse. However, on at least one occasion during his tenure as drummer for Nirvana, he donned a top hat that likely made Kurt Cobain go green with envy.
9) Kurt Cobain in a gray t-shirt and black coat
Kurt Cobain was a musician, singer, and songwriter who lived between February 20, 1967, and April 5, 1994. Although he became famous as a grunge rocker in Seattle during the early 1990s, he was actually raised in Aberdeen, Washington. He was born to a working-class family but gained attention for his music with Nirvana. His signature dress style included ripped jeans and heavy boots with worn t-shirts.
10) Black Converse Sneakers with White Laces
The inspiration for Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit music video. These classic sneakers are as timeless and versatile as they come. It’s a look you can still rock today. The grunge icon was rarely seen in public without his black-and-white converse high tops, which fit right in with his casual style…and continue to be popular among celebrities and everyday people alike.
